On the amount and domain of focal lengthening in Swedish two-syllable words

چکیده

A production study was conducted to investigate the effect of focus on the temporal structure of Swedish two-syllable words. Speakers read aloud simple three-word sentences with systematic variation of the position of focus in the syntactic structure. All the words in each sentence had the same word accent, either acute or grave and they were all two-syllable non-compounds. In general, focus on a word caused a lengthening of about 25%. However, the amount of lengthening varied with speaker and position in the syntactic structure. Measurements of syllable durations revealed that both syllables in the words contributed to the lengthening but most of the lengthening occurred in the stressed syllable.

On the amount and domain of focal lengthening in two- syllable and longer Swedish words

Temporal effects of focusing have been investigated in two-syllable and longer Swedish words. Words are lengthened in focus, though to a varying degree by different speakers. Even if stressed syllables are the most affected, the domain of lengthening appears to be the word.

Temporal effects of focus in Swedish

The four experiments reported concern the amount and domain of lengthening associated with focal accents in Swedish. Word, syllable and segment durations were measured in read sentences with focus in di!erent positions. As expected, words with focal accents were longer than nonfocal words in general, but the amount of lengthening varied greatly, primarily due to speaker di!erences but also to p...

On the amount and domain of focal lengthening in Swedish

Temporal effects of focus in Swedish were studied in short sentences with systematic variation of the length and prosodic pattern of target words in different syntactic positions. Generally, focus caused an average increase in word duration of about 25%. Variations of word length, stress, or word accent pattern did not produce any systematic effects on the amount of lengthening of the target wo...

Is non-linear lengthening important for the perceived naturalness of focal accented Swedish words?

Previous studies of lengthening patterns in focal accented Swedish words have shown that the segments within the words are not lengthened in a linear fashion (e.g. Bannert, 1979; Fant, Kruckenberg, & Nord, 1991; Heldner & Strangert, forthcoming). The non-linear lengthening patterns are most apparent within stressed syllables with a phonologically short vowel followed by a long consonant (due to...

On the Non-linear Lengthening of Focal Accented Swedish Words

Swedish is a quantity language and there is a distinction between phonologically long and short vowels in the stressed syllable. In addition, there is a complementary relation between the vowel and the immediately following consonant – the consonant being short whenever the vowel is long (V:C) and long (VC:) or part of a consonant cluster (e.g. VCC) when the vowel is short (Elert, 1964). In oth...
